The Benefits of Learning Mandarin

Updated: Apr 27, 2023

Mandarin is increasingly being recognized as a popular option for a second language.

In today's globalized world, Mandarin has become an increasingly important language for children to learn, especially as China is one of the fastest growing economies in the world today. Learning Mandarin offers numerous benefits that make it an excellent choice for kids looking to expand their language skills, broaden their cultural understanding, and gain an edge in their future career!

One of the most significant benefits of learning Mandarin is the potential for global business opportunities. Mandarin has become an increasingly important language in global business. Even in Vancouver, many companies require their staff to be able to speak Mandarin. Having the ability to speak Mandarin gives you an edge in business whether in China or in the West. Children today can gain a significant advantage in the job market and open up exciting career opportunities in fields such as international business, diplomacy, and tourism.

Beyond the professional benefits, learning Mandarin can also improve cognitive function. Learning a second language has been shown to improve cognitive abilities such as memory retention, problem-solving, and creativity. Studies have found that learning Mandarin can improve brain function and enhance mental flexibility, which can be beneficial for kids as they grow and develop.

Despite it’s reputation as the most difficult language in the world, Mandarin is a lot simpler than other European languages because it has no subject verb agreement, no plurals, no conjugations, and no tenses. There is no masculine or feminine verbs as with Spanish and French. The numbering system is very simple too. That is why it is an easier language to learn from a grammatical point of view. However, there are thousands of characters to memorize. Additionally, there are 4 different tones that you need to master. For example, "Soup", "Sugar", "to lie down", and "Hot" are all written the same way ("tang"), but are pronounced differently based on the 4 different tones. This can get tricky, especially with people learning Mandarin from an English-speaking background. However, if you’re persistent, it will be a well worth your time!

Learning Mandarin can also provide a deeper understanding of Chinese culture and traditions. With China's rich history and diverse population, learning Mandarin can broaden kids' horizons and allow them to connect with Chinese people and communities on a deeper level. Understanding Mandarin can also help children better understand the culture and values of Chinese people, which can be helpful in building relationships and fostering cultural exchange.

As the 21st Century progresses, Mandarin will become increasingly more important to learn as a language. Knowing Mandarin will open up exciting new career opportunities, and help you gain a competitive edge in the global marketplace. As China's economy continues to grow, the ability to communicate with Chinese partners and clients in their native language can establish trust, build stronger relationships, and facilitate successful negotiations.
